Assistant Strength And Conditioning Coach

The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised of 21 varsity sports (10 men's, 11 women's) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530.

The Strength And Conditioning Coach assesses, motivates, educates, and trains athletes with the primary goal of improving sport performance. Reporting to the Director of Strength and Conditioning, the Strength and Conditioning Coach independently oversees sport-specific testing sessions, designs and implements safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs, and guides athletes in nutrition and injury prevention for assigned teams. Recognizing their area of expertise is separate and distinct from the medical, dietetic, athletic training, and sports coaching fields, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialists consult with and refer athletes to these professionals when appropriate.

Reporting to the Director of Strength and Conditioning, the Strength and Conditioning Coach works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

  • In coordination with individual head coaches, develop and implement strength and conditioning programs for varsity athletic teams as assigned by the Director of Strength and Conditioning; create and direct sport-specific training techniques, focusing on strength and speed, quickness, and agility workouts.
  • Create and distribute annual strength and conditioning programs and maintain records of all programming, assessments, and attendance through an online strength and conditioning platform.
  • Demonstrate and effectively teach exercises and drills using varied teaching methods.
  • Collaborate in the development, implementation, and continuous review of policies and procedures for strength and conditioning operations.
  • Assist in all aspects of strength and conditioning operations, including but not limited to student supervision, equipment maintenance and cleaning, and organization of the weight room and storage room.
  • Collaborate with the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager on maintenance and care of the facility and equipment.
  • Work extensively and mutually with the athletic training staff in athlete injury prevention and aid in the rehabilitation of injured athletes.
  • Complete projects as assigned by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, Performance, and Health, and Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation. Topics include, but are not limited to, mental health, wellness, and nutrition.
  • Provide expertise, guidance, training, and oversight in strength and conditioning for fitness-related programming for the campus community and student population.
  • Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division III, CMS Athletics, and the SCIAC. Report any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department.
  • Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention.
  • Represent the CMS Athletic Department and Strength and Conditioning Department positively within the SCIAC, regionally, and nationally.
  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

Education: A Bachelor's degree in a related field is required. A Master's degree in a related field is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of collegiate strength and conditioning experience is required.

Licences: Must be NSCA CSCS, or CSCCa SCCC Certified. Must maintain annual continuing education. First Aid/ CPR/ AED certification is required. A valid driver's license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College's authorized driver's policy.

  • Deploy professional skills in athletics, strength and conditioning, and team building, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College's strategic interests.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of tasks.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software such as Teambuildr or other software. Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

The regular hours for this full-time position are at least 40 hours per week, up to 7 days per week, on a variable schedule. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the College or division. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

The anticipated salary range is $62,920 to $64,000 per year. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Employees are expected to wear attire that is appropriate to the office or department in which they work.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a full consumer background check. Certain positions will require the successful completion of a post-offer physical agility test.
